Alternative Social Media Marketing for Businesses Participating in #StopHateForProfit

Reading Time: 2 minutes

More than 400 brands like Unilever, adidas, Ben & Jerry’s, North Face, Verizon, Microsoft and Coca-Cola have now pledged to not run ads on Facebook through at least the end of July. They are asking Facebook to better handle hate speech and misinformation on its platform. The boycott is intended to not only force a reckoning within Facebook but also motivate advertisers to take a look at their marketing strategies. The question is: do we really need Facebook?

If you are participating in the #StopHateForProfit campaign you might be interested in alternative marketing strategies for your business. Below we listed a few suggestions on three examples of alternative social media platforms to test:

3 Alternative Social Media Channels

• Snapchat: Snap Ads are full-screen vertical video ads that can be up to 10 seconds long. They are an exciting, largely untapped advertising channel for marketers. Its user base is very active (160M in the world). Most Snapchatters don’t use any other social media platform and their engagement is very high with the ads’ swipe up rate five times higher than the average clickthrough rate of other social media ads.

• TikTok: this short-form, the video-sharing app allows users to create and share 15-second videos on any topic. It is the most popular free app in the world and 2020 is looking like the year that TikTok takes over. Roughly 50% of its global audience is under the age of 34. So it is extremely popular with Generation Z and if this is your target audience you should definitely run ads on the platform. For anyone with a business that produces video content, TikTok is worth joining and experimenting with.

• Youtube: There’s no better time than now to promote your YouTube channel. YouTube recently overtook Facebook as the second most-visited site on the web. In short, YouTube is continuing to grow in popularity with no signs of slowing down. Ads on this platform have exceptional performance metrics and the channel is amazing for traffic, leads, and branding. To run ads on Youtube you just need a Google Ads account and Youtube channel.
