This is where trend-spotting comes into play, across both Paid and Organic Social.

The power of trends: right place, right time

Trends are one of the most immediate ways for a brand to join conversations already live online. An audio, format, song, hashtag or meme can quickly gain visibility and become part of a platform’s culture. For a brand, tapping into a trend means leveraging an existing interest rather than having to build attention around a piece of content from scratch.

The main strength of trends is their timing: joining a conversation while it is gaining momentum can increase content relevance and, in some cases, help reach a much wider audience than the one a brand would normally engage with. At the same time, this is also their main limitation: the relevance of a trend is temporary. Something at the centre of the conversation today can quickly lose visibility within a few weeks or even just a few days.

Paid Social: immediate visibility, high competition

Unlike organic content, which relies on the algorithm to determine reach, Paid Social guarantees visibility from the very first moment a campaign goes live. This makes it a particularly effective lever for capitalising on a trend while it’s still at its peak: a boosted or dark post can put a brand in front of a broad, well-defined audience within hours, without waiting for organic traction to build.

However, speed comes at a cost. Indeed, while trending topics generate a spike in engagement, they also attract a spike in competition: more advertisers try to insert themselves into the same conversation at the same time, driving up auction costs and making it harder to stand out. For this reason, a brand that wants to ride a trend through Paid Social needs not only fast creative turnaround, but also a media strategy that can adapt bids and targeting in real time to stay cost-efficient as competition intensifies.

There’s also a question of fit: not every trend lends itself to paid amplification. Trends rooted in spontaneity, irony or community-specific codes can lose authenticity — and therefore performance — the moment they’re pushed through a clearly commercial, paid format. Due to this, the most effective use of Paid Social on trends tends to be less about jumping on every wave, and more about selecting the trends that align with the brand’s tone of voice and amplifying them with precision, rather than volume.

Organic Social: building discoverability over time

Social SEO follows a different logic. This channel refers to a set of strategies aimed at optimising social content so that it can be discovered by users through search. Keywords, captions, on-screen text, hashtags and, more broadly, contextual signals all contribute to making it easier to associate with users’ queries.

People no longer use social platforms just to discover content, they also use them to search for information. As a result, a content’s visibility depends not only on its ability to stop the scroll and generate engagement in the feed, but also on its ability to be surfaced as a consequence of an active search.

Relevance in the moment vs. discoverability

The difference between the two approaches can be summed up in one key concept: trends & Paid Social work on relevance in the moment, while Organic Social works on discoverability.

This does not mean these should be viewed as alternative approaches. Their real potential emerges when they are integrated into a single, omnichannel strategy, with all marketing channels working together towards the same goal.

A piece of content can start from a trend to take advantage of its momentum, while also being built around a topic or question that users are actively searching for. In this way, a brand can both participate in a conversation at its peak popularity and create content that retains its own relevance afterwards.

This dynamic is particularly relevant on TikTok: the platform is evolving from an environment primarily focused on content discovery and consumption into a space where users actively search for information, answers and inspiration. For brands, being able to read these signals means moving from simply chasing trends to creating content that is more relevant, searchable and capable of retaining value over time.

Has TikTok become a search engine?

TikTok’s transformation from a social platform into a new space for search and discovery is about both the number of people using the platform to find information and about how this behaviour is evolving.

Search no longer necessarily follows a linear path: it can start with a specific need, but also with a simple curiosity sparked by a piece of content, leading to further research and, in some cases, to a need the user did not initially have. This is where search and discovery begin to overlap: a user may search for something specific, but can also discover something that prompts them to search for something else.

The data confirms this evolution. In a study by TikTok Marketing Science, 61% of TikTok users say they discover new brands and products on the platform, while half of users use it to research products or brands.

But what drives users to search on TikTok? Or, more precisely, what kind of answer do they expect to find on the platform? The difference compared with traditional search engines lies in the result and in the experience through which information is delivered.

Reasons why users turn to TikTok for search include short-form video, which provides essential information quickly; the interactive element, which allows users to explore further through comments and other people’s experiences; and content personalisation, which makes the response more closely aligned with individual interests.

Users, therefore, are not just looking for an answer to read, but for an experience that helps them understand, evaluate or imagine.

This is where TikTok offers interesting potential for sectors such as travel, hospitality, beauty, fashion, food and lifestyle. Faced with a search such as “things to do in Verona”, Google may return a list of results to browse, while TikTok can show someone taking users directly into that experience through a video, recommendation, review or personal perspective.

Search, therefore, is no longer simply about capturing a query: it means being present in the content and conversations through which users are trying to find their way.

And this is where Social Listening comes in.

Social Listening

If users express their needs, interests and questions through social content and conversations, how can a brand pick up on these signals before turning them into content?

When the goal is to identify the needs and questions that shape user behaviour, various social listening, monitoring and AI tools come into play. When used together, they can turn a large volume of conversations and digital signals into useful insights for content strategy.

To understand their target audience brands need to do more than listen: they need to learn how to read and track the signals people leave online.

From signal to idea: how to build content from Social Listening

Social listening becomes truly useful when the signals collected are transformed into concrete guidance for producing new content that responds to audience interests and needs.

The process starts with listening, but moves through several levels of interpretation: first, brands observe what people are talking about and what they are searching for, identifying the most frequent topics and emerging trends.

This is where social listening and AI tools can help turn a large volume of signals into insights that are easier to interpret and apply.

One example is AI monitoring platforms such as BuzzWatch, which allow brands to analyse their presence within AI-generated responses to specific searches and intents. By monitoring prompts and conversations, it is possible to identify which brands are associated with specific needs, in which contexts they emerge and how visible they are. This adds another layer to traditional social listening, helping brands understand what people are searching for or discussing and how they are being considered within the information journeys users are taking.

The same approach can be applied in reverse, to content that has already been published. For example, by analysing insights from a TikTok video about a wine-related event, queries such as “Verona sunset aperitivo” emerged as search terms that had led users to the content. This shows how content created to communicate a specific event can also capture broader search intent, thereby expanding the opportunities for increased organic discovery for brands.

At this stage, however, not everything that emerges will necessarily be relevant to every brand. The crucial step is to filter these signals through your own context, audience and brand identity, identifying which topics represent a genuine communication opportunity and which do not have a strong enough connection with the brand’s positioning.

A relevant insight does not necessarily have the same value at every moment. To understand when it should be turned into content, another layer of analysis comes into play: seasonality.

Seasonality: not every insight has the same value at every moment

Insights gathered through social listening and search tools need to be assessed in terms of relevance and also timing. A need may recur throughout the year, while becoming particularly relevant during certain periods, seasons or specific moments.

Seasonality therefore adds another layer to search analysis: it is about understanding what users are searching for, but also when that need emerges, reaches its peak or becomes particularly relevant.

This also directly affects content performance. Given the same topic, content can be more effective when it captures the context, mindset and interests of the audience at that particular moment. Giving a topic a seasonal angle can therefore make it more relevant and, as a result, more capable of capturing attention.

One example is the content created for a hotel located in Europe. In August, content with a stronger summer tone and focus on outdoor spaces is likely to perform much better than more generic communications. This demonstrates how seasonality is more than a tonal choice: it can be a genuine driver of relevance.

This does not mean that seasonality needs to result in content that is only useful for a limited period. It can also be used to give evergreen topics renewed relevance, identifying the most appropriate moment and angle for bringing them back to the audience.

In this sense, the question is not only, “What are users searching for?”, but also: “When is this need most relevant to them?”

The combination of topic, search intent and timing makes it possible to turn an insight into more relevant and contextualised content.

This is the point where research moves into content creation: how to turn these signals into a creative idea, choose the right moment and build content that is native to the platform, consistent with the brand and genuinely useful to the user.

From research to content: how does an insight become content?

An insight alone is still not a piece of content. Content creation is where all the signals gathered so far come together: what users are searching for and talking about, when that need becomes most relevant and how the brand can enter that conversation with content that offers genuine value to the viewer.

The research phase therefore gives way to content strategy: understanding the intent behind a query, identifying the opportunity for the brand and building content around that insight that has a reason to be searched for, viewed and shared.

On TikTok, this also means adapting the idea to the platform’s language. Content needs to be designed for an environment where people do not simply consume information, but discover it through videos, creators, experiences and conversations. Hooks, format, pace, text and storytelling therefore become part of the response to the original insight.

At the same time, being native to TikTok does not mean giving up the brand’s identity. The challenge is to find the balance between what works on the platform and what feels authentic to the brand, allowing the language to evolve without losing recognisability. Research, in this sense, does not simply determine what to publish. It helps explain why a piece of content may be relevant, while creativity determines how to tell the story.

Branding, not just trends

When moving from insight to content, another element inevitably comes into play: trends. On TikTok, where new formats, audio, memes and storytelling styles emerge and evolve rapidly, brands can easily be tempted to chase whatever is performing well at a given moment. Speed alone does not guarantee relevance.

A trend becomes genuinely interesting when there is a natural point of connection with the brand. There is no need to reproduce it exactly as it appears on the platform: it can be reinterpreted, adapted or used as a starting point for telling a story that already belongs to the brand’s world.

At the same time, brands need to know how to speak to different audiences, which also means being able to choose different trends depending on who they want to reach. This ability to select, more than speed of reaction, is what distinguishes a trend that is simply being followed from one that genuinely says something about the brand.

Content creation and checklist

Once the intersection between insight, seasonality and trends has been identified, one final step remains, and it is often overlooked: checking that the final piece of content has genuinely translated the research into practice. During the creative process, it is easy for the initial insight to become blurred or replaced by choices driven purely by aesthetics or the trend of the moment.

For this reason, before publication, it can be useful to run the content through a checklist that helps maintain the connection between research and final output:

Is the chosen topic still relevant? It is not enough for the insight identified through social listening to be recognisable in the content. It also needs to remain relevant when the content is published, without having lost its timeliness during the creative process.

Has the content been optimised? Do the caption, on-screen text and hashtags reflect the words and queries used by users, or do they remain anchored in more brand-led language rather than real audience signals?

Is it the right time to publish? Is the content being published when the need is most relevant or could it feel disconnected from the context identified during the analysis phase?

If a trend is used, is it clearly referenced? Does the chosen format stem from a genuine point of connection with the brand or has it simply been replicated to avoid being left out of the conversation?

Is the content native to the platform? Are the hook, pace and storytelling designed around TikTok’s native language or are they an adaptation of content originally created elsewhere?

Does the content retain value beyond the lifespan of the trend? Can it continue to be discovered and generate value after the conversation that inspired it has faded?

The framework above is therefore more than a simple, rigid checklist to be ticked off mechanically – it is a consistency check designed to ensure that every piece of published content is visually effective and the result of a process that starts with listening, considers the right moment and leads to a genuinely informed creative choice.

Key takeaways

Trends for Paid and Organic Social should be viewed as complementary levers, with the strongest strategies bringing the two together.

In this context, TikTok is a space for entertainment and discovery and increasingly a place for active search, where users look for answers, inspiration and information, often through a journey in which search and discovery overlap without following a linear path.

For brands, this means that work on the platform cannot stop at listening to the conversations of the moment. It requires a method that starts there, while also understanding when a topic deserves to be explored and how to keep it consistent with the brand’s identity.

This is the shift in perspective TikTok is asking of brands today: rather than choosing between being found and being relevant, brands need to create content capable of meeting both challenges, from the peak of a trend to long after the conversation has faded.

If you’re trying to work out what a search-native
